Fairhope Librarians

06. PHOTOS_Page_1.jpg

The Fairhope Public Library began with the collection of Edward and Marie Howland.  The Howlands joined a utopian colony in Topolabampo, Mexico where, Edward, already suffering ill health passed away.

Marie Howland joined the Single Tax Corporation and relocated to Fairhope and settled in her home called "The Pines".

Edward Howland was book dealer and collector and Marie brought his collection with her to Fairhope.  She began lending out the books from her front porch and as the collection began to grow from donations, Marie outgrew her house and Fairhope's first library building was built in 1909.

Over a century later, the library is still going strong and serving the people of Fairhope with a diverse collection and many up-to-date services.
